TikTok fans all over the United States are worried that their days with TikTok are coming to an end. Lawmakers all over the world, especially in the USA, have been concerned with TikTok's national security. Many people are worried that TikTok may leak personal information to the Chinese government. With everything going on between China and America (such as balloons sent over America and government agencies meant to spy on the USA), many people don't feel safe giving their information to an app with a very large number of followers that happens to be run by a Chinese company.
So, what do students think about everything going down with the app? Student Amishna from Class 604 advocates on behalf of TikTok and thinks that it's great for entertainment and that you can even learn from the things you see on it. On the other hand, student Eli, from Class 701, thinks that TikTok should be banned and that it steals information from little kids who don't know anything about it. He says that people should watch the news more to find out valuable information like this.
In 2020, India banned TikTok since it had allegedly been secretly transmitting users' information to servers outside of India. Due to this, TikTok lost around 150 million users that it had attracted from India when it was banned in the country.
While Montana is currently the only US state to have signed a bill banning TikTok on personal devices, there are government organizations that have already prohibited its use for security reasons. The future of TikTok and its presence on personal devices remains uncertain as discussions around national security and data privacy continue.
If TikTok gets banned for us middle schoolers, it means we won't be able to use the app anymore. We'll lose our favorite way to have fun and be creative. It's where we connect with our friends and follow cool trends. TikTok also has educational videos that we can learn from. Not having TikTok might make us feel sad and miss out on things. But on the bright side, it could also mean we're safer online and our parents don't have to worry as much. Overall, a TikTok ban would change how we have fun and connect with others, but we'll find other ways to enjoy ourselves.
