On February 2nd the Phoenix volleyball teams competed against the established McKinley Lions in an intense match-up. Unfortunately, the night did not end in our favor, as we lost all four games, both junior varsity and varsity. The games took place in the MS.890 gymnasium. Even though our school lost, we still did well because of our sportsmanship and teamwork and that's what we love about M.S.890. As spectators present with paying tickets, we cheered and had faith in them. Even though we lost, we’re grateful that our players tried their best to win.
Our athletes, coached by Ms. Elie and Ms. Mohamed, put up an incredible fight. Our junior varsity players, Amishna, Naelle, Natazia, Simone, Sophia, Miley, Niana, Luna, Angela, Michelis, and Daniela showed grit and determination, working together to try and turn the game around. Despite their efforts, the opposing team managed to pull ahead in both games and secured the win, 15-21 and 18-21.
Our varsity team, Michelle, Sofia, Daniella, Makayla, Elise, and Yeslyn, Nylah, Keren, Gabriela, and Ariela put up an equally impressive performance, displaying incredible skill and teamwork on the court. However, 259 proved to be a tough opponent, and again, we were unable to win with final scoreboard of 20-21.
Despite the outcome, it's important to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our athletes. Volleyball is a challenging and physically demanding sport, and it takes a tremendous amount of practice and discipline to become skilled enough to compete.
While it's always difficult to lose, it's important to remember that setbacks and defeats are a natural part of any competitive endeavor. Our athletes, and our school, will take this experience as an opportunity to learn and grow, working even harder to improve their skills and come out better in the event. We should also remember that our school's volleyball program is relatively new, and we are still building up our team and developing our skills. While it may take time to establish ourselves as a force to be reckoned with, we are confident that with hard work and support we will continue to grow and thrive.
Game Day Interviews
Daniela, JV Player
Ẅho do you think will win and why?
I feel like... that's hard… Mckinley probably. Because my aims are good and they actually go for it instead of like us like we don't move..
Are you confident in yourself?
No, definitely not.
Michelle, V player
Do you think you're still gonna play volleyball in the future?
Most likely
What did you think about this game?
It was nerve racking.
Why did you join volleyball?
I don't know, I just like playing volleyball.
What do you think about MS890 VS MS259?
It could be better.
Sophia, JV Player
How often do you practice volleyball?
I practice Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, afterschool, and on the weekends.
What's the most important thing to remember when playing volleyball?
Defense, because most girls don't have defense and lead our team to lose.
Who do you think will win and why?
In varsity I think …we will win or it will be a tie.
Coaches
Is there something specific your team could improve on?
Sportsmanship and more teamwork and defense.
What did you think about the game?
We loved it. Yes, we lost but we were happy without results. And we didn't make it easy for the other team.
What were your team's strengths like what did they do well?
I think what our team did well. Their serves were on point. Our strength was that it was at home so they knew our court really well and the support [from the crowd] and they also had tactics that they've been working on and I think, overall, that was one of the strengths.
Do you think next game were gonna probably win?
We hope, so fingers crossed. We hope for a win and, hopefully, they continue to work on building their skills.
