On March 8th MS890 had its annual school science fair. It was a fun and informative evening event where parents were invited to witness the impressive work of MS890 student scientists. The projects on display ranged from social experiments to chemistry, showcasing our diverse interests.
During the science fair, there were very colorful projects, bland projects and even a project on Hello Kitty and fake snow. The event lasted for about an hour and a half.
One project focused on the topic of what melts ice the fastest. His hypothesis was that salt melts ice the fastest. The students displayed outstanding creativity and science in their research and presentations. His hypothesis ended up being correct which is probably why he was the 6th grade first place winner for the science fair. His name was Sami and he is from 604. He will be going to the school district science fair later this year.
Another one of the most interesting projects was the experiment on whether music preferences can predict personality types. The students designed a survey to collect data on music preferences and used established personality tests to analyze the results. The findings were surprising, with some unexpected correlations between music genres and personality traits. Willa won the 7th grade spot with her project. She will also go on to present her project at the district level later this year.
The final winner was Elise Augustin and she was in the 8th grade first place winner. Her project was about enzymatic browning. Enzymatic browning is when foods mostly fruits and vegetables start to turn brown. This is a very common occurrence that people see in their everyday lives. That is probably why people put lemon or lime on their apples because the citric acid prevents this reaction from happening. This was an amazing and very informational project. That is why she was the 8th grade winner and will also be presenting her project in the school district science fair.
