By Eliezer Beltran
Eliezer: What was the biggest struggle doing the show?
Ms.Russo: I think two things, I think the music for Matilda is very difficult. It’s a lot more difficult than other musicals so having the cast learning the music was really hard. I think the other thing is all the set changes with the black theater blocks is very difficult for people to navigate it.
E: Why did you choose Matilda for this year’s production?
Ms.Russo: That’s a good question. We wanted to do something that all the students will be excited about doing and since the Matilda Musical film came out this year it seemed like the perfect time to do Matilda.
E: Were there any scenes or songs that were hard?
Ms.Russo: I think the two of the hardest songs were the school song and Revolting Children because it’s a lot of difficult singing with difficult choreography. As for scenes, right before Revolting Children when all the kids decide to revolt against Ms.Trunchbull was also very hard to stage.
E: How did you match the students to the roles?
Ms.Russo: You know we have an audition process so we heard everyone sing and say lines and, based on that, all three directors sat down and we really tried to place everybody in a role that will fit them and will match their talent.
E: Can you share any memorable moments from rehearsals?
Ms.Russo: One memory that comes to mind is when we were doing the Amanda trip scene where Ms.Trunchbull is supposed to throw Amanda in the air, and of course we can’t actually throw our actress in the the air so, I’m not going to give away how we do it but it’s a really funny moment that everyone is going to enjoy.
E: How did you come up with the costumes and the props?
Ms.Russo: We pulled inspiration from other Matilda Jr shows and the Matilda Jr Broadway show and based on what we saw we kinda found things on Amazon and NIA helped us purchase it.
E: What are your plans for next year’s play?
Ms.Russo: We are completely not sure yet but I always tell everyone if you go to MTIshows.com website, that’s Musical Theater International, you can look at all the junior shows because we do junior for middle school and it can be any of those on the list, so not sure yet.
