On March 24th, the sixth grade went on a trip to the American Museum of Natural History. We took a coach bus there and the ride was an hour long. The museum was in Manhattan and even the bus ride there was fun in and of itself because it was a chance to bond with our friends outside of school.
When we first got in, we entered the Cosmic Pathway exhibit and saw the planets and how they work. There was a spinning sand stand that showed how Jupiter works and it looks like a yellow sea. My personal favorite exhibit, though, was the planetarium. It felt like we were actually there in outer space.
Small groups of students went to different exhibits throughout the museum. These include Early Humans, Gems and Minerals, Dinosaurs, the Big Bang Theater, Reptiles and Amphibians, and Hall of Planet Earth. Then all the groups returned for our final exhibit at the planetarium.
The Hayden Planetarium screened World Beyond Earth which was a 23 minute immersive movie that took us to the world beyond our galaxy, the Milky Way. It showed all the planets and taught us about them and the potential for life out there. It took us to our neighbor, Mars, and one of the many moons that are orbiting Saturn. It really reminds us how tiny we are and how small Earth is compared to the vast Universe.
