Multi-Media Drawing

For this project we were learning about how to create different values using charcoal, ink, and pencil. The first thing we did was try to draw a sphere with pencil. After that we were shown how you should draw a sphere using charcoal and we drew three more spheres. The three other materials we used for the spheres were charcoal, pen and ink, and ink wash. The next thing we did to learn more about value was a value scale in pencil, charcoal, and ink. It went from lightest to darkest. Our final project was to recreate a black and white picture that we took using the materials we had learned about. We printed out the picture and drew a grid over it because we had to draw it on a larger scale. I used the grids on the paper and the picture to draw the outline of the backpack in pencil. Then I used charcoal to shade the wrinkles of the fabric because it was easy to smudge and blend it and I used ink for some of the stitches and the letters on the front of the bag. I started out using charcoal for the shadow of the front pockets but it wasn't dark enough so I went over it with ink. The main element of art that I used for this was value because it was in black and white so I had to use different shades of black, white and grey. The other elements of art that I used for this were line and shape. The principles of art that I used were balance and unity. I don't think I had enough contrast because the backpack and the wall behind it are both grey so it doesn't stand out enough, I could have fixed this by making the backpack and the shadows on it darker. I like how the final product turned out because it looks very similar to the actual picture, I think the shading where the fabric folds turned out well. One thing I would change about it is I would make the whole backpack darker so that it stood out more from the background.
