This assignment was to think of a subject to make a sculpture of using a material that is related to the subject. I decide to make my bunny, Phoebe, out of hay and her food pellets because that's what she eats. The first thing I did was print out a high contrast picture of her and grid it. Then I drew a grid on a piece of cardboard and used it as a reference to draw Phoebe. I wasn't really sure how I was going to use hay on this when I thought of the idea so I tried a couple different ways before I figured it out. I used elmer's glue to glue down small pieces of hay all lined up in the same way on the bunny. I used some lighter hay for around the eyes to make them stand out on the face. I didn't put any hay in the places where her fur is white. In the picture I used as a reference Phoebe is lying down on a blanket so I outlined that in hay and then fill it in with smaller pieces going in different directions to make the pattern of the blanket different from the pattern of the bunny. I put less hay in some places to show where there was more light on the blanket. I didn't want to put more hay in the background so I glued her food pellets there instead which also made it look more 3D. I put the pellets on vertically to sort of add some contrast with the hay on Phoebe going horizontally. At first I thought the background going forward more than the subject would be weird but it actually turned out looking pretty cool. I chose to make this specific artwork because I made a scratchboard drawing of Phoebe last year and I really liked how that looked. It was also easy for me to get the materials because I already had a ton of hay that Phoebe eats.
The elements of design that I used in this project were line and texture. I used line to outline the bunny and the blanket and there is texture in the materials that I used. The principles of design that I used were contrast and pattern. I used contrast by making half of it hay and half of it food pellets. I used pattern in the background and the blanket. One of the things I would change about this is create more emphasis on Phoebe because she sort of blends in with the blanket.
