My concentration is bees so the second project I chose to do was a clay bear because bears are associated with bees and honey. To make it relate to my concentration more, I added sgraffito designs that had to do with bees like flowers, honeycomb, and a bee.
I started out by drawing a couple different views of what I wanted the bear to look like with the designs on it. I used some reference photos of bears sitting to get the pose right. I had some problems when I started making the bears out of clay because I wanted to get the shape of the torso right and also add the back legs. I found that it was easier to just add on pieces of clay a little bit at a time instead of trying to shape one piece of clay. I had to be careful when I added the legs because I wanted to make them mostly hollow while I connected them to the rest of the body and I wanted the pose to be the same as the one I had drawn. The last thing I did was add the head and then I let the clay dry out. After the clay was dry I realized I had forgotten to make a hole in the bottom of it so I had to carefully make one with a sharp clay tool. Then I smoothed off the clay with another clay tool. While I was smoothing off the clay one of the legs and a foot fell off because of how fragile the clay was. Then I painted on three layers of underglaze. Once the underglaze was dry I drew the designs on with a pencil making sure they matched up to my sketches of how I wanted the bear to look. Then I scratched the designs onto the bear. The last thing I made was a very small bee out of sculpey to put on the bear's nose. I added sculpey gloss glaze to the wings to make them shiny. One problem that I had with the bee was that it was so small that it fell into the bottom of the toaster and I had to use pliers to get it out. The last thing I did was add a clear glaze and glue the legs back on.
The elements of art that I used in this sculpture are line, shape, form, and color. I used line in the sgraffito designs and shape in the honeycomb that is made up of hexagons. I used form because the bear is a 3D sculpture. I used color in the small bee that is resting on the bear's nose. The principles of design that I used for this project are balance, contrast, pattern, and emphasis. I used balance in the bee that is drawn on the bear's chest because it is pretty symmetrical. I used contrast and pattern in the sgraffito designs because the are white on black patterns of honeycomb and flowers. There is emphasis on the bee on the bear's nose because it is the only part that has color.
