Sustained Investigation #6

Space

8 .25" x 6.25"

For this drawing I wanted to include space and the sky as a part of how humans interact with nature. The idea behind it is that people like to use the sun and the sky as inspiration for makeup and jewelry. I didn't want to do another simple portrait so I broke up the person's face into different sections that were spread out on the page and included the main features of the face.

The materials that I used were colored pencil, watercolor, and metallic watercolor. I started by coloring the background blue and drawing the planets with colored pencil. Then I colored each section of the face with watercolors. I added detail to the face with colored pencil and then went around the edges with yellow colored pencil. I was going to use the gold watercolor for the sun details on the face but I ended up using it to go over the edges of the pieces and to paint the stars.

I used shape for the pieces of the face that are randomly shaped in a way that almost looks like puzzle pieces. When I colored the planets I used different values to show that they are 3D. I used line to draw the stars and outline the face and created unity by doing both the stars and the outlines in gold paint. There is emphasis on this gold because the rest of the colors are more dull. There is contrast between the background and the face because the background is a cooler color and the face has warmer colors on it. My project evolved as I added more details like the planets and had the face go outside of the border. My next steps could be to find other ways to present a portrait.
