Melt
10" x 7"
For this project I was supposed to do another thing for the scholastics awards. I already had something for most of the categories and was done submitting things so I decided just to make something random. I sketched a few ideas out in my sketchbook and then I decided to revisit an idea I had had a few projects ago that I didn't use which was a drawing of a person melting. I didn't use it before because I could find the right way to make it into a full drawing instead of just parts of a face. I decided just to draw a portrait in pencil and then add in the melting details after. Then I went over it with a red colored pencil for the shadows and lines and then used a yellow colored pencil for the highlights. I did this because I've been practicing with colored pencils and using more bright a limited colors. I ended up really liking it so I redrew it on a bigger piece of paper and added a back ground but I still like the one in my sketchbook better.
The material I used was colored pencils. I felt like I couldn't make the shadows dark enough and I need to work on not leaving white showing when I use colored pencils. I also went over the eyes with a regular pencil to make the lines darker.
I played around with color in this drawing by using mostly red on the person and then adding some yellow and orange. I used blue and purple in the background to create some contrast between the warm and cool colors. I also add some yellow around the person to make it look like she was giving off some light like a candle. I made the values get darker in the background as they got further away from the person. By making the colored pencil marks very noticeable I added texture. My project evolved as I added more colors because I started out with just red and then kept adding to it. My next steps could be to add onto this piece by darkening it.
