The word I chose to describe the first semester of this year was sudden because the end of the semester arrived very suddenly. One of the first things that came to mind was a panda falling out of a tree. I wasn't sure how to make a paper sculpture so I was learning as I went.
I started out by rolling up some paper to make a tree branch. I only put glue on a couple times at first which was a mistake because when I finished the sculpture that part of it unravelled a little bit. I was using a glue stick that was blue and I thought it would dry clear but it didn't so there are a couple blue spots on the branch. I started the panda by making the torso and folding it so the panda would look kind of curled up. Then I drew out the shape of the head in a way so when I cut it out I could fold it into the right shape. I had to color on it with pencil for the black part of the fur because I didn't have any black construction paper. I mostly used a glue stick for this sculpture but towards the end I switched to Elmer's glue. Then I made the tree by rolling up a some paper and then putting more paper wrapped around it for texture. Then I cut up the top and twisted the pieces into branches. I also glued a couple leaves on. The last thing I did was glue the tree to a base after gluing the Panda on so that it would balance well. I also cut up some paper to look like grass on the base.
This project was difficult for me because I didn't really know what I was doing. My idea seems more difficult than making something abstract but it was more fun for me to make a panda. I had to test out different ways to use the paper to help me figure out how to make this sculpture. I don't love how my sculpture turned out but for a first attempt at a paper sculpture I think it is pretty good.
