Circle Project

For this assignment we had to create a drawing that included a circle in some way. First I thought of three different ideas that included a circle and made sketches of them. Then I had to pick which one I wanted to use which was pretty difficult for me because I am bad at making decisions. I finally chose the girl in the bubble because even though it was more complicated than the others, I liked the idea better. First I drew it in red colored pencil on watercolor paper and then I used watercolors to color it. Once I finished drawing the personI realized that the bubble would have to go outside of the border in order for it to be a full circle but I liked that idea because it makes the painting more interesting. I also added a fish blowing more bubbles that went out of the border on the right to make it look more balanced. I was going to do an outline in black pen but I didn't need to because I was able to add enough detail with just watercolor.

I have never drawn or painted bubbles before so I just did a simple circle with some highlights on it so I think I would try to improve that if I were to change something about this painting. It doesn't bother me that much though because it follows the simple cartoon style of the painting. Another thing I would change is the girl's arm and hand because it looks kind of awkward and the wrist is too thin.

The elements of art that I used in this painting are line, shape, color, value, and space. I used line because I outlined the girl in darker versions of the color of her clothes, hair, and skin with watercolor. I used shape for the bubble which is a circle. I used color to in the paint and value in her hair to show the highlights and shadows. I used space in hte way it was arranged with the bubble coming out of the frame.

The principles of design that I used in this painting are pattern, balance, and contrast. Her clothes have dots on them which is pattern. I tried to make it balanced by adding the fish in the top right corner. It is still not completely balanced, but it is better than it would be without the fish. I used contrast by making the bubble a very light blue and the background a darker blue so that the bubble would stand out.
