This assignment was to create an abstract piece of art based on an emotion. I started out by drawing a lot of different patterns that could represent emotions. I chose my favorite which was the anxiety pattern and I was going to base the whole thing off of that. I wasn't very happy with that idea because doing just one pattern seemed boring to me. I decided to change my idea so I could draw this cool house that I found a picture of. I did a sketch of it on a paper where I was practicing designs and really enjoyed drawing it. I had to find a way to add the emotions and patterns into the house so I took some designs from the emotions paper I did and put them all over the house to make it more detailed. I think the main emotion I was basing it off of was happy because all of the patterns together look sort of fun. However, there are a variety of emotions that could be interpreted from this drawing because I put a lot of different emotion patterns in the drawing. On the garage doors is the pattern that represents anxiety, around the windows on the right side of the house is the pattern for happy, and the roof has the pattern that represents calm.
I started by drawing the house in pencil and making sure the patterns looked right. Once I was happy with the pencil drawing I went over it using a couple different black pens which took a long time. I changed a some of the patterns while I was going over it in pen. One problem I had while I was drawing this was that I kept accidentally smudging the pen. The smudges were small and I ended up drawing over most of them. One went outside of where I wanted any lines to be so I tried to go over it with a white pen which worked a little bit but didn't get rid of it completely.
The elements of art that I used in this drawing are line, shape, and value. I used line because the whole thing is done in black pen line and most of the patterns use lines. I used shape in the basic shapes of the house and in all the shapes that make up the patterns. I used value by doing a lot of tiny lines to creates grays in the places I wanted shadows or darker colors. I only colored in a few shapes completely black.
The principles of design that I used are contrast, unity, and pattern. I used contrast because the drawing is done in black pen on white paper. I used unity by having different patterns, but making them in the same color and material. I used pattern because the house is covered in a variety of different patterns that represent emotions. I was inspired by the picture of the house I found because I thought the design of it was really interesting and I like drawing houses. Overall, I am pretty happy with how this drawing turned out.
