Sustained Investigation #14

Two Peas in a Pod

8.5" x 11"

This piece is based off of the phrase "two peas in a pod." It included two guys sitting in a pea pod dress very similarly in all green because the phrase two peas in a pod is often used to describe two people who are alike and get along well. They are also using the pea pod as a boat because I thought the way they were sitting in it made it look like a canoe. I chose to make the people have green skin because they are representing peas so they are like peas as people and not just regular people sitting in a pea pod.

I drew this piece digitally using procreate on my iPad. I decided to draw it digitally because it is easier to try different colors and change the way things are arranged on the page. This was helpful because I was trying a different perspective and needed to rearrange the pea pod a few times to make the perspective look better. I also wanted to practice using darker colors and if I used watercolors or colored pencils I wouldn't be able to get dark enough colors and there wouldn't be enough contrast. For the lines I used the dry ink brush because it give the lines more texture and then I used the studio pen brush to color everything.

For the fish I used a darker value of blue and made them different sizes to add some depth to the water. I also used a lot of different values of green for the pea pod and the different greens of the clothes and the shadows. I had all of the fish circling the boat the same way the ripples in the water did to show some movement. The vines on both sides of the boat and around the edges are the same to balance the image. I used the lightest greens on the people to add emphasis to them and keep them from blending into the pea pod too much. The water, fish , and leaves that fill the space around the boat create a sort of pattern. Having the people be all green adds some unity between them and the pea pod. My project evolved as I played with the perspective and then added the vines and fish to fill the negative space around the pea pod. My next steps could be to try using darker colors with traditional colors since I practiced using them digitally in this piece.
