Covid-19 response #1

Spring

8.5" x 11"

This drawing was a response to the current situation with Covid-19. The idea behind it is that the person is like the embodiment of spring but they look kind of sick because spring is still happening but it's different this year because of the pandemic. I love spring so even though everything is cancelled right now it's nice to look forward to the flowers blooming and the weather getting warmer. I also added the coronavirus in her eyes and in the background with all the bugs. I thought about adding a mask but it didn't look good with the colors I chose and I didn't want to hide that much of her face.

I drew this digitally using procreate on an iPad. Originally it was just a portrait practice but I couldn't get the hair right so I just made her bald and started adding a lot of flowers and shapes and just making it up as I went. Then I added some bugs in the background to add to the spring theme. I came back to that sketch for this project because I felt like it applied well to my idea for the prompt. I cleaned up the colors and lines and added details to relate it more to the coronavirus. I liked doing it digitally because when I do digital art I usually end up choosing colors that look better together than I would with traditional art.

By keeping my first sketch for the line art and just cleaning it up with the eraser instead of going over it on a new layer I think it adds more texture. I filled the negative space in the background with simple bug drawings and then made them a darker value of the background so they didn't take too much of the focus off of the subject. I used another value of that color to write "spring time 2020" so that the idea of the piece was clearer. The last thing I added was the long lower eyelashes because I wanted to put emphasis on the eyes where the images of the coronavirus are. There are a few different patterns on the person's skin which are the flowers and the triangles and then there are a couple of more 3D flowers sitting in her collarbones and cheekbones. This highlights the sickly look that she has but also emphasizes the idea that flowers are still growing despite the virus. There is some contrast between the eyes and the rest of the image because I used mostly warm colors but for the eyes I used green. There is also some green on the bottom of the image where I drew some leaves surrounding a hole in her chest where more flowers are growing. My project evolved as I added more details to make the drawing apply to the prompt better. My next steps could be to make art responding to Covid-19 where the idea is more specific and shows how I have been affected personally.
