For this project I had to create a design that represented an inclusive community. First I had to fill out a paper that would help me think of ideas. The first idea I had was a bunch of people standing around a table and the table had a model of a town on it and they would all be working on it together. I didn't really like this idea and I couldn't figure out how to make it look the way I wanted it to . The second idea was just a big group of people but it was difficult to draw all of those people. I came up with a third idea really quickly before I had to share it with the class. I started drawing a bunch of cartoon houses that were all unique to represent an inclusive community. I decided to do it in watercolor because I hadn't used watercolor in a while. I started out with the sky and immediately had a problem when the watercolor became splotchy in a couple places. I don't know why it did that but I didn't want to start over because it took me a while to do the sketch. Starting to paint the houses was difficult because I didn't have an idea for the colors. I decided to just use three shades of the color I chose for each house. I painted the grass after I painted the houses and it turned out a little uneven but I think it's fine. I was going to go over the lines with black pen if I didn't like how it looked with just watercolors so I tested how that would look with pencil. I ended up outlining the whole thing with pencil and leaving it like that because I liked how it showed the lines but not too much.
I drew most of the houses just from my imagination but I started running out of ideas so I found some pictures online of houses that were sort of fairy tale style and used those as references for a couple houses. I think this represents an inclusive community because all of the houses are unique but they are all on the same road and they make up this colorful neighborhood. You could also imagine what kind of people live in each house.
The elements of art that I used are shape, color, line, and space. I used shape and color in all the different colorful houses that are made up of shapes. I used line when I outlined everything in pencil. I also used space because on the left you can see the houses go further away into the background. The principles of design that I used are emphasis and unity. I used emphasis because I out the houses on the hill so you look mostly at those even though there are other houses on the left. I used unity because all of the houses are different but the road that they are on unites them.
