Gummy Worm Chasing a Gummy Bear
10" x 7"
The story of this drawing is that a gummy bear is being chased by a gummy worm across a table. The prompt that I was given was a gummy worm being chased by a gummy bear and I chose to have the gummy bar looking behind it to show that it was being chased. The gummy worm's expression is also kind of angry to show the story even more.
I started out with a sketch in pencil and then used colored pencil to color it. I chose colored pencil because I wanted more control over the values in the gummy bear to try and give it more depth. Gummy bears are kind of see through and I wanted to try and get the colors right to give it that effect. I also used a white pen to add some highlights and make it look more like a gummy. I am not very used to using colored pencils so this was good practice.
The first thing I pictured when I got the prompt was having the gummy worm not be fully in the picture to make the composition more interesting and use the space in a different way. The shape of the gummy bear is sort of rectangular and it has short legs so I had to find a way to make it look like it was running away so I had it turning its head towards the gummy worm with a worried expression. As I was coloring the gummy bear I started light and then added darker values of red. I didn't want to go too dark though because I still wanted the effect of the gummy being see through. By having the gummy worm in a squiggly shape it suggests that it is moving like a real worm. I also added to the piece as I went by giving it a background which included and opened bag of gummy worms. At first I wasn't sure what type of setting this unique chase scene would be in but I ended up just having it be on a table like someone's snack had come to life. My next steps could be practicing more with colored pencil and doing darker shading with them.
