For this project I wanted to try a different material from clay or sculpey. I had an idea for my concentration that I wanted to do but I didn't know how to make it 3D. I decided to try embroidery because that way I could use the idea and try something new. First I watched a couple basic tutorials and got the materials I needed. I did a couple different sketched of my design before using pencil to draw it on the fabric. I was going to try putting it on a bag but I decided just to try a piece of fabric first. I started out with the flowers at the bottom which took me a long time because they were all different kinds of flowers. Then I moved on to the person and started by outlining the face in black. Then I added the facial features and the bees on the face. It was difficult to add the bee on top of the face because the thread kept getting tangled. The next thing I did was the hair with long stitches to make it look more like hair. Then I outlined the beehive in yellow and filled it in. Halfway through filling in the beehive I ran out of the yellow that I was using and had to switch to a lighter yellow but I think it looks better that way. I left an empty space for the bee on the beehive because I didn't want to but the bee on top of the thread like I did with the face. This made it way easier to do the bee and the wings looked neater than the other bees. The last thing that I did was add some honeycomb pattern in a few places on the beehive in an orange–yellow color. I also put the honeycomb on the girl's forehead because I thought it would sort of tie in the beehive more. I spent a very long time on this project and I am happy with how it turned out.
The elements of art that I used in this project are line, shape, color, value, and texture. I used line to outline the face and the ferns. I used shape in the hexagons that make up the honeycomb pattern and in the features of the face. Color is in the whole thing because the whole thing is very colorful, especially the flowers. The beehive includes three different values of yellow and the ferns had different values of green. There is texture in the whole thing because of the material I used.
The principles of design that I used are balance, emphasis, pattern, and unity. There is balance because the plants curve up to the same hight on each side and the face is pretty symmetrical. There is emphasis on the beehive because it is the part with the most solid color and the girl's eyes are looking at it which could draw the viewer's eyes to it. There is pattern in the honeycomb and the flowers. And there is unity because the yellow flowers at the bottom match the yellow beehive at the top.
