Covid-19 response #3

Strange Dreams

8.5" x 11"

I've heard a lot of people talk about having more strange and detailed dreams recently and I have also been having dreams like that so the idea behind this piece was to illustrate that shared experience that people are having in quarantine. I decided to show the dream as if it was actually happening inside the person's head and could be seen through the hole in her face. The perspective is closer up so you can see the details in the image of her dream and also because I have already done two shoulders up portraits for my coronavirus responses and wanted to try something different.

I made this piece digitally because that's how I drew my first two responses and I wanted to connect them by using the same materials for all three. This also made it easier to add a lot of smaller details into the dream. I started with the face and then sketched out a couple different dream options in the empty space before coming up with the girl sitting on a mushroom petting a flying goldfish. I used the same colors on the person in the dream as I did on the face to show that it's her in the dream. For the face I used black outlines but I didn't add those in the dream because I wanted to make the dream and reality look more separate from each other. In order to add details in the dream part of the drawing I used darker values of the colors for the outlines and shading.

I chose to color the face blue to show that it's night time and then used a few darker values or that blue for the shadows. I used simple shapes for the shadows on the face to create contrast with the detailed style of the dream and the sketchy lines I used for the shadows in it. I had the dream take place at night so that I could use the same blue colors on the girl in the dream to connect it to the sleeping face. This also went with the blue color theme I chose for this piece. My first two covid responses also had a sort of color theme to them so this helped connect all three pieces. The goldfish and the "z"s stand out because they are warm colors. Having something that is in a warm color in reality and in the dream helps to unify the two sections of the drawing. By drawing the face closer up I was able to fill the page more and make a better use of the space. I added the "z"s at the top to make it clear that she's sleeping and to fill some of the negative space that was left. There are multiple patterns in this drawing such as the clouds, goldfish, mushrooms, stars, and the "z"s. My project evolved as I added more details to the dream like the clouds in the background and the grass for more texture. My next steps could be to use what I've learned from these past three pieces to continue to develop and improve my art.
