Science & Technology AOLE

Here are some examples of activities which can be done using digital technology to support the Science & Technology AOLE.

These could be adapted to suit the topic or theme in the classroom.

Learners should develop their ability to demonstrate their understanding of that knowledge in various media.

The teacher's role is to ensure that learners are equipped with the knowledge of the subject area and an understanding of the tools to express what has been learnt.

Science & Technology

Hwb Applications

Adobe Express

Science- Learners can use Videos and presentations to document their investigations or experiments. They can create infographics and web pages to support learners evidencing what has been covered in class.

Technology- Using videos, presentations, webpages and infographics learners can document their design process, create logos etc. for their design projects.

Britannica Education

Science- Make use of encyclopedias to conduct research.

Technology- Research solutions which have been found for 'problems' e.g. bridges or other structures, and gain an understanding of historical solutions to design problems.

Minecraft for Education

Science- Create animations which explain scientific processes, and write up experiments using word processing or presentation tools. Learners can use J2data to record and demonstrate the use of data from investigations or experiments.

Technology- Use J2data cost design mass production. Use word processors, and presentation tools to document their designs.

Minecraft for Education

Science- Use the science worlds to build, experiment and explore the concepts they examine.

Technology- 'Mock-up' designs in different worlds, they can then add signs/boards/NPCs to explain design aspects.

Some examples

Space- Adobe Express is used here to show how an infographic can be created based on the subject area of the planets.

It is important to identify that these skills can be adapted to other areas of the curriculum and infographics can be created on several subject areas.

Thanks to Dominic Traynor at Adobe for this lesson

Science- Using J2e aminate in the JiT tools, allows learners to create animations which move through and explain physical processes.

These could be used to show: a life cycle, the water cycle or any other life process which goes through several stages

Science & Technology- Using Adobe Express, learners can create videos which fulfil success criteria.

Here is a video of how a biodiversity project was completed in Golftyn CP.

These videos can be created to explain scientific experiments and navigate through all the aspects usually completed in a book.

Possible Classroom Activities

Animations

How to create stop motion animations using Just2Easy...

Learners could create animations which record the processes of physical changes. For example, they could be used to explain life cycles.

Infographics

How to create infographics using Adobe Creative Cloud Express...

Learners can creat infographics which explain scientific processes, or their design processes.

Podcasts

Using Podcasts in the Classroom

Learners being able to create their podcasts will allow them to explain what they have understood about a topic they have been learning about. A podcast allows learners to interact and share information in a 'semi-formal' manner. They can plan their conversation and have a lead 'interviewer' who can direct the conversation with questions, they will need to develop their listening skills to allow their conversation to not seem scripted. TIP...the less scripted content the more real the conversation.

Videos

Create Videos to explain what has been learnt and understood in the classroom

Learners can make use of several apps within the Hwb platform to create Videos. In creating Videos learners can be asked to write scripts for the videos they are making, planning the images/videos they add to their final presentation.

Scripts can be created that fulfil the success criteria of the subject area the video is about.

Peer assessment can take place to check the content of the videos fulfils the criteria set. This also allows learners to consolidate their understanding of the subject area.

Websites/Webpages

Create Websites/ Webpages to explain what has been learnt and understood in the classroom

Learners can create websites or webpages which document their design processes and choices. They can record scientific processes/experiments/investigations and add images/videos which support their findings.

Minecraft

Using Minecraft in the Classroom

Minecraft has activities created in several worlds; all arranged within the Biology, Chemistry and Physics areas of the Subject Kits. These can allow learners to conduct experiments and see reactions through the world of Minecraft.

Learners can create 3D representations of their designs using Blocks. Designs and builds can be documented using a Book & Quill or screen recording. Learners are also able to make use of 'RedStone' to create moving parts.
