Year 1

Year 1 is where learners can start to apply their understanding of using technology to create work.

The Ideas shared within this section are based on the progression map example, this does not mean that these should be taken as expectations, but as possibilities.

Based on the progression map and where it states that Chromebooks are introduced in Year 1, it allows teachers to use additional platforms. Some of these examples will depend on the devices available to the learners in year 1.

Just2Easy

Writing

Learners could start to use the writing app in Just2Easy to start to develop their typing skills, if they are copying text they will start to understand the function of adding spaces between words.

Paint

Learners can continue to create images, thinking about the perspective of the additions they make to their pictures.

Data Handling

Learners can start to start to add their own data to charts and see a visual representation of their data. They can then start to think about questions their data representations can answer.

Animations

Learners can start to create animations in JIT5- animate. They will be able to start to understand that animations are created by making small alterations to the aspects of the animation/story.

Coding

Within Just2Easy, J2Code can be used with the advanced settings. This will allow learners to predict and debug their algorithms.

Google/Office365/J2Office

Digital Learning Platform (DLP)

Learners can start to access their 'assignments' through either Google Classroom or Microsoft TEAMS.

This can be explained to learners as their digital book, it is where they will find out the work which has been set.

NB. For teachers, this will allow them to organise the work of their learners under the topics of the 6 AOLEs.

Storage

If learners are starting to make use of Chromebooks they may begin to understand how Google Drive if using Google Classrooms or OneDrive if using Office365 will be where their data is now saved.

An introduction to knowing how 'my files' works will support understanding online storage.

Presentations

Learners can start to use presentations shared with them in their DLP.

They should be able to reorder slides to retell stories. Possibly start to adapt text that has been added to the slides.

Additional apps

Minecraft

Learners can start to build in Minecraft, they can start to create fulfilling set criteria on topics/themes covered in school.

Flip

Learners can start to use Flip to record videos or audio of their work.

By using videos learners can articulate their understanding of different topics more effectively than they can in a written format.

Learners can also start to play with the filters/backgrounds/images, this should allow the opportunity to discuss altering images in a basic form and not believing everything they see online.

Britannica Education

Learners can start to understand searching for information from a trusted source. They can use keywords to search for information on areas covered in class.

Britannica education allows your learners to listen to the information they find, therefore not needing a high reading level to access the information.
