Classroom Ideas SAMR

When using technology within classroom pedagogy, the most important consideration is that the learning objective is at the core of the decision-making.

These examples will follow the SAMR Model, where at each level there comes a deeper use of technology.

For staff just starting on their digital journey you can begin with 'S' Substitution, at this level the teacher uses technology as a substitute for their current classroom practices.

Through to 'R' Redefinition, technology is used to redefine the learning activity. These activities are not possible without the use of technology.

Teachers need a better understanding of the tools as they move through the SAMR continuum. It can often take a little longer to complete a task at the Redefinition level, however, there is a deeper understanding of the learning objective and a better understanding of the technology used.

An example of the SAMR model in action, this example is of learners being asked to write a news report about World War II, the text in this example is taken from www.literacywagoll.com/reports-and-recounts.html

The Learning Objective of learners is to be able to write a news report which includes quotations. This example shows the same text used throughout with different levels of technology integration. It is important to note that in the final example, learners would need to write a script to present to the camera, learners are also able to rerecord until they are happy with the presentation. (That was my first attempt)

Not all paper-based classroom-based tasks can be replicated at each level of the SAMR model. It is important to remember that it is not always necessary to make use of technology if it does not enhance the learning experience or develop new skills.
