Humanities AOLE

Here are some examples of activities which can be done using digital technology to support the Humanities AOLE.

These could be adapted to suit the topic or theme in the classroom.

Learners should develop their ability to demonstrate their understanding of that knowledge in various media.

The teacher's role is to ensure that learners are equipped with the knowledge of the subject area and an understanding of the tools to express what has been learnt.

Humanities

Hwb Applications

Adobe Express

Religion Values & Ethics- Create videos, infographics, webpages or presentations on the different areas of study within RVE.

History- Create timelines in infographics or videos detailing specific events over a period. Create presentations or webpages on historical investigations.

Geography- Create infographics or videos detailing physical processes, presentations or webpages to show a learner's understanding of areas covered in a school curriculum.

Social studies- Learners can use Adobe tools to demonstrate their understanding of the social studies they have covered in school.

Business studies- Learners can create business logos, and promotional material for a business to develop an understanding of the steps a business must go through to generate work.

Britannica Education

Religion Values & Ethics- Research to gain a deeper understanding of the areas covered within the classroom.

History- Research using an authentic and verified source. This can be used to identify dates and events of the past.

Geography- Learners could research the different areas of Geography to find examples which support aspects of the curriculum.

Social studies- Research where differing ways of living are exemplified across the world.

Business studies- Research different businesses and develop an understanding of the histories and ways in which they were formed and managed.

Just2Easy

Religion Values & Ethics- Create pictures/animations/Coded simulations to explain and show what has been learnt and understood.

History- Create databases on historical people/events. Create animations retelling specific events in history.

Geography- Create databases about different places. Create animations about physical processes.

Minecraft for Education

Religion Values & Ethics- Recreate religious artefacts/places, identifying the different elements of their builds.

History- Make use of the pre-created worlds to explore historical events/civilisations. Recreate historical elements using what has been learnt in class to ensure accuracy.

Geography- Use the different biomes to explore differing terrains. Make use of the worlds created for geography as a subject area.

Social studies- Explore the social sciences worlds and activities created in Minecraft

Hwb Applications

History & Geography- By downloading Google Earth Pro, you can take screen-shots of the same places over different periods.

Here you can see images of Shotton and Queensferry from 1945 and the same area in 2021.

History- Here Adobe Express is used to create an infographic based on how Mummies were made in Ancient Egypt. This video could be followed by learners or the skills adapted to support expressing the understanding of a different subject area.

Thanks to Dominic Traynor at Adobe for this lesson

Geography/History- Using the Adobe Express Video tool learners can create a video which explains what they have understood. They can create a video which fulfils a success criteria, this activity is most successful when learners write a script to support their video.

Often writing a script first and then creating a video to support their text can work best.

Possible Classroom Activities

Animations

How to create stop motion animations using Just2Easy...

Learners can create animations using frame-by-frame animations to explain processes. These could be used to show life cycles, seed germination, water cycles, or any process with several steps/stages. Animations can also be created to allow learners to retell stories or events. TIP...Learners should plan their animation and the steps/stages in the process they are explaining.

Infographics

How to create infographics using Adobe Creative Cloud Express...

Learners can create infographics which explain geographical processes, historical timelines or religious characteristics.

Podcasts

Using Podcasts in the Classroom

Learners being able to create their podcasts will allow them to explain what they have understood about a topic they have been learning about. A podcast allows learners to interact and share information in a 'semi-formal' manner. They can plan their conversation and have a lead 'interviewer' who can direct the conversation with questions, they will need to develop their listening skills to allow their conversation to not seem scripted. TIP...the less scripted content the more real the conversation.

Videos

Create Videos to explain what has been learnt and understood in the classroom

Learners can make use of several apps within the Hwb platform to create Videos. In creating Videos learners can be asked to write scripts for the videos they are making, planning the images/videos they add to their final presentation.

Scripts can be created that fulfil the success criteria of the subject area the video is about.

Peer assessment can take place to check the content of the videos fulfils the criteria set. This also allows learners to consolidate their understanding of the subject area.

Websites/Webpages

Create Websites/ Webpages to explain what has been learnt and understood in the classroom

Learners can create websites or webpages which show what has been learnt, these could be on topics/areas covered in class.

Learners can record the processes they have been through, showing research and explaining the learning and choices that have taken place and been made.

Minecraft

Using Minecraft in the Classroom

Minecraft can be used in several areas of the Humanities AOLE.

Learners can make use of the worlds in the History and Culture area of the Subject Kits.

These can be used to allow learners to develop their understanding of the worlds already created. Learners can create their representations of what they are learning in their humanities studies.

Signs/boards/NPCs can be added to give additional meaning to what learners have created.

The Book & Quill or screen recording can then be used to create a piece of work that demonstrates a learner's understanding of the subject area.
