Expressive Arts AOLE
Here are some examples of activities which can be done using digital technology to support the Expressive Arts AOLE.
These could be adapted to suit the topic or theme in the classroom.
Learners should develop their ability to demonstrate their understanding of that knowledge in various media.
The teacher's role is to ensure that learners are equipped with the knowledge of the subject area and an understanding of the tools to express what has been learnt.
Expressive Arts
Hwb Applications
Adobe Express
Art- Create pieces of Artwork using Adobe's Text to image using generative AI.
Draw pictures using Adobe's Drawing tools
Dance- Record dances and create videos in which the learner can critique the performance.
Film & Digital Media- Create videos which can be cropped and edited, and have music and audio added as needed.
Britannica Education
Art- Research different artists and styles using a verified information source.
Dance- Watch dances from around the world stored on Britannica School
Film & Digital Media- Research the films and digital media from the past
Music- Research different elements of music relating to what is being covered in the class.
Just2Easy
Art- Create simple pictures using the drawing app in JIT5
Film & Digital Media- Create animations in JIT5
Minecraft for Education
Art- Create 3D pieces of artwork in the world of Minecraft, replicating artwork at scale.
Film & Digital Media- Create retelling of stories/films using characters and creating replica sets.
Some examples
Art- Using Adobe Express, learners can use the Text to Image feature to generate images as the base of an idea. These images can be 'tweaked' with additional prompts for the AI to generate the image.
Music- Chrome Music Lab allows learners to create their own music tracks using a range of methods.
Learners are also able to compose collaboratively in some of the features in Chrome Music Lab.
These pieces of music can then be downloaded to be used in pieces of work learners are creating
Music- Apple's GarageBand is available on iPads and as a downloadable version. Through GarageBand, learners can overlay different instruments to compose intricate pieces of music.
Art- These examples of digital artwork have been created on Google Drawings by @EmmaCottier and shown on X (formally Twitter)
Drawings can be used to create simple pictures using shapes and layers
Art- Use Spreadsheets to create pixel art of images.
Possible Classroom Activities
Picture Editing
How to edit images using Adobe Creative Cloud Express...
Why...
Learners, now more than ever, need to understand that what they see online may not be a true reflection of real life. By developing their skills in manipulating and editing images they will develop an understanding of what others may have done to the images they see online.
How...
Open Adobe Creative Cloud via Hwb
Open Text to image
Add information about the image you want to create
Select the content type None, Photo, Graphic or Art
Publish work
Copy the link and share it with the class teacher via Microsoft TEAMS or Google Classroom
or
Open Adobe Creative Cloud via Hwb
Select the size of the image
Add an image to edit
Select the image and use features to edit as needed Generative Fill, Erase, Remove Background
Additional images can be added and overlaid to create new pictures
Publish work
Copy the link and share it with the class teacher via Microsoft TEAMS or Google Classroom
Podcasts
Using Podcasts in the Classroom
Why...
Learners being able to create their podcasts will allow them to explain what they have understood about a topic they have been learning about. A podcast allows learners to interact and share information in a 'semi-formal' manner. They can plan their conversation and have a lead 'interviewer' who can direct the conversation with questions, they will need to develop their listening skills to allow their conversation to not seem scripted. TIP...the less scripted content the more real the conversation.
Videos
Create Videos to explain what has been learnt and understood in the classroom
Learners can make use of several apps within the Hwb platform to create Videos. In creating Videos learners can be asked to write scripts for the videos they are making, planning the images/videos they add to their final presentation.
Scripts can be created that fulfil the success criteria of the subject area the video is about.
Peer assessment can take place to check the content of the videos fulfils the criteria set. This also allows learners to consolidate their understanding of the subject area.
Websites/Webpages
Create Websites/ Webpages to explain what has been learnt and understood in the classroom
Learners can create websites or webpages which show what has been learnt, these could be on topics/areas covered in class.
Learners can record the processes they have been through, showing research and explaining the learning and choices that have taken place and been made.
Minecraft
Using Minecraft in the classroom
Minecraft can be used in several areas of the Expressive arts; learners can build to create 3D representations.
Once built learners can add signs/boards to explain what they have created, they can also add Non-Playing Characters (NPCs) to their builds to offer interactive responses to their work.
Learners can document the creative process by using the 'book & quill' to house pictures they have taken along with text. Or, they can use a screen recording tool to record a voice-over explaining the builds created.
There are also several worlds learners can use to support their understanding of the Expressive Arts.
