Learners will explore aspects of collection, representation and analysis. They will look at how data links into our digital world and will provide them with the essential skills for the modern, dynamic workplace.

An introduction to Spreadsheets and Databases, what are they and how can they be used

PS1 Data and information literacy

I can collect data found in my environment.

Learners could-

complete a nature search by looking at different leaves
collect data about their classmates
look at the colours of cars that pass/are in the car park

I can sort and classify objects using one criterion.

Learners could-

group objects by colour/size/type
separate toys by soft/hard

I can present and evaluate my data by creating simple charts, e.g. pictograms.

Learners could-

use a chart to check their favourite colour/fruit/pet/animal
use pictures to represent objects
be able to identify the most/least common

PS2 Data and information literacy

I can collect, enter, organise and analyse data into different groups or formats, e.g. tables, charts, databases and spreadsheets.

Learners could-

record information about heart rate/breathing rate
collect data on vehicles passing a set point
temperatures in different places at different times
length of shadows throughout the day
find out classmates' favourites (colours/foods etc.)
create bar charts from the data collected
create a database about a set topic (themselves/a country/sports teams)

I can extract and evaluate information from tables and graphs to answer questions.

Learners could-

learners can identify statements of fact from their collected data
identify the relevant data within a data set
answer questions about charts/graphs/tables
create questions about charts/graphs/tables

PS3 Data and information literacy

I can construct, refine and interrogate data sets within tables, charts, spreadsheets and databases to test or support an investigation.

Learners could-

collect data sets from parents and a wider audience with closed questions
complete an environmental impact survey
gather data on activity levels
track the number of laps of a track over time
measure distances and times from athletics activities
complete a river study to measure depths and speed

I can use a range of spreadsheet formulae, e.g. + - / x, sum, average, max, min.

Learners could-

use the sum to add several cells together, this could be adding the number of laps of the 'Daily Mile' at the end of a half-term
find the average of a set of repeat results, this could be the average of times or distances recorded in athletics PE sessions
use basic maths functions to manipulate data, learners could create their own multiplication chart

PS4 Data and information literacy

I can create a data capture form, capture data, search data and create a database and spreadsheet with appropriate data input methods.

Learners could-

collect data from surveys conducted on a set topic
add/transfer data collected to the appropriate
use devices to collect data and ensure it is added appropriately

I can perform analysis on simple data sets including grouping data as appropriate.

Learners could-

data sets can be sorted and filtered to support analysis
data from one sheet can be added to others

I can analyse large data sets and identify trends where appropriate.

Learners could-

PS5 Data and information literacy

I can use appropriate programs to produce statistical evidence based on my own collected data/identified scenario and justify reasoning.

Learners could-

Implement their data into reports to support their work
Write wordprocessed documents with live links to the data/graphs being produced from the data collected.

I can use my data to explain and add validity to conclusions and, where possible, modify conclusions and/or hypotheses.

Learners could-

When writing up science experiments, learners can link their data to their results to support their conclusions.
When creating/building devices in Design Technology they can show results from previous builds to show the rationale behind design improvements.
