Working and Long-Term Memory

Information may be rehearsed in the mind just for short periods of time, for use in a particular activity in short-term or working memory, or it may be encoded into long-term memory so it can be retrieved together with other experiences far in the future.

  • Long-term memory has obvious importance for learning.

  • Short-term memory plays a prominent role in complex cognitive tasks and daily activities.

  • Everything going into long-term memory, has to pass through short-term memory.
