Studies show that Learners tend to put their focus and energy into activities/lessons that align with their goals and values. If a student finds no personal value in a particular lesson or activity, they will not be engaged.

According to the text, the concept of value determines a learners’ judgments about:

(1) Whether a topic or task is useful for achieving learning or life goals.

(2) The importance of a topic or task to the learner’s identity or sense of self.

(3) Whether a task is enjoyable or interesting.

(4) Whether a task is worth pursuing.

One positive outcome of learning about how students value education is the tie between success and the value they place on the experience. As students experience more success at a task or in the overall endeavor of learning, the value they place on to those activities can increase over time.
