Retrieval Practice

Retrieval practice

Research shows the act of retrieval itself enhances learning. In the future, the ability to retrieve and use knowledge again is enhanced.

Benefits of retrieval practice

  • Generalize across individual differences in learners

  • Variations in materials

  • Different assessments of learning

STUDIES SHOW:

Retrieval practice can be useful memory remediation practice among older adults.

*Most research addressed simple information, rather then deeper understanding.

EXAMPLE OF RETRIEVAL practice

  • GROUP 1: Read text 4x

  • GROUP 2: Read text 3x and recalled texts once by writing down as much as could remember

  • GROUP 3: Read material once and recalled during three retrieval practice periods

FINAL TEST:

Given 1 week after initial learning session.

RESULTS:

  • Students who practiced retrieval 1x recalled more of the information than students who only read the texts.

  • Students who repeatedly retrieved material performed the best.

  • Actively retrieving material after studying is more productive then spending time reading repeatedly.
