Assessing Learning

According to research from Pellegrino (2014), they found that assessments in a K-12 educational environment are used for:

  • Provide specific content about what an individual student has or has not learned about the material that has been taught. This information informs them about their own progress and is beneficial to the teachers since they can shape the instructions to meet the needs of these students.

  • To observe learners' achievement after completion of a period of schooling such as at the end of a school year or end of course.

  • To observe and evaluate programs and institutions and monitor the learning at the school, district, state, or national level.

Assessment

"In order for an assessment to be effective, its design must reflect an understanding of how people learn."

What's the Purpose of an Assessment?

An assessment helps us as educators to see if our teaching practices are helping them learn as the semester moves forward. Parents concern on their children's education helps us create assessments that identifies if the material they are learning is important. Furthermore, assessments help stakeholders in a national and state context as they are able to just this information and formulate policies that aim to improve areas of growth.
