formative assessment

An effective Formative Assessment clearly states the learning targets, and provides feedack to the teacher and students about where they are in relation to those targets.

This type of assessment assists learning in the classroom by providing the teacher with information to identify and narrow any gaps in student learning. Based on the diagnostic information, teachers can decide how to adjust insturction. Students are able to see their progress so that they can make needed changes to their work and learning processes.

Things to remember

  • No one test or assessment can serve all purposes for all audiences.

  • There is a positive association between Formative Assessments and student learning; which holds true across age groups, core school subjects, and countries.
