Effects of Choice
The allusion of choice helps people take on challenges that they wouldn't normally take.
Allowing for a choice could increase, or even generate, a person's interest in whatever is being studied.
Having the students recognize that they had made the choice will likely make them feel that they have to fulfill that decision.
When giving students an assignment, giving them the option of the format they would need to submit could increase the likelihood that they would put more effort into it.
When giving students a reading assignment, allow them to choose the book, article, blog, etc. that satisfies the learning standard(s) that you are trying to accomplish.
