Reading: Last week, we began our new unit on ancient American civilizations; the Maya, Aztec, and Inca. This week we focus on the Maya civilization. We will read to describe the organizational structures of the Maya and explain how they adapted to the diverse landscape. We will also get to explore their writing and mathematical systems and summarize reasons for the possible decline of the civilization. During class, we read chapters aloud together and have discussion based on a variety if inferential, evaluative, and literal questions. This is where I am able to gauge comprehension and engage students by having them share their thoughts and understandings.
Grammar: Students will identify subjects and predicates in sentences and differentiate between action verbs and linking verbs. We will also work on identifying run-on sentences and rewriting them into complete sentences.
Morphology: Prefixes il- and -ir meaning "not"
Writing: Students will learn how to paraphrase information. Meaning, they will read information and then write it in their own words! They will use their notes to construct a paragraph describing the geographical features of Maya civilization.
Homework:
Personal narrative due by Monday 9/30 (Since we did not have school Friday).
Activity page 3.1- Read passage and complete response question- Due Friday
Activity page 4.4 (front and back)- Practicing prefixes il- and ir- due Friday
