Reading- 9/9 - 9/13
Math- Week of 9/16 - 9/20
Language Usage- Week of 9/23 - 9/27
This week, our focus will be on using dialogue to better understand character relationships and identifying theme within narratives. We continue reading a narrative called The First Real San Giving, where our discussion questions will focus on making inferences. I have really enjoyed all of the small writing opportunities the students are getting on a daily basis to write about their own personal experiences. It is a great way to learn more about one another.
This week, the class will complete some beginning of the year assessments for morphology and spelling.
No homework this week!
*Vocabulary quizzes will be back after we finish the Reading MAP test! (Our process may look slightly different than last year.)
Math: Mrs. Bennett
This week, students will explore the concept of powers of 10 by applying it to real-world astronomy. Through a collaborative activity, students will work in small groups to create scaled maps of the solar system, using whole-number exponents to represent vast astronomical distances, such as the distance from the Sun to each planet. This activity helps students understand how multiplying by powers of 10 affects the number of zeros in a product and why this mathematical concept is crucial for expressing large numbers in a simplified form. By integrating content-specific skills like exponents, place value, and multiplication, students will develop a deeper understanding of how mathematics is used in scientific fields like astronomy.
Homework:
9/3 - SS #1
9/4- SS #2
9/5- SS #3 at school & SS #4 at home!
9/6- SS Quiz #1
Simple Solutions Quiz Update:
This year, students will take a Simple Solutions quiz bi-weekly, which means they will have two quizzes each month. Each quiz will consist of 15 questions that align with the homework they have completed that week—some even identical to the homework questions! Students will receive a sheet with the questions and a sheet to show their work/answer the questions, just like their homework. The quizzes will be graded out of 15 points. We will grade the homework in class, giving students the opportunity to discuss any questions or review their work together before the quiz. The graded quizzes will come home the following Wednesday, so please be sure to review your child's work to help support their math understanding at home!
Social Studies: Mrs. Crush
This week, we will continue our Civics Standards Unit, where students will:
Explain the political structures of various governments in ancient civilizations.
Analyze the relationship between governance and religion in River Valley Civilizations and Classical Empires.
Describe key political institutions such as monarchy, democracy, republic, empire, and theocracy.
Evaluate the rights, roles, responsibilities, and limitations of citizenship in classical Greece and Rome.
Assess how historical, economic, geographic, and cultural factors influence social and government structures.
Last week, students were given different scenarios of the ancient civilization governments and act out in front of their classmates. See photos below. They really got into character!
Religion: Mrs. Crush
This week in Religion, we started the week off by learning about our saint of the month: Saint Robert Bellarmine. We focused on how one, including Saint Robert Bellarmine, becomes a Doctor of the Church. We will then begin Chapter 4: The Word of God Made Present among Us. Our students will:
Know how God worked in the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth.
Learn that God instructed His people to build the Ark of the Covenant, through which He was present to them.
Come to know the similarities between God's presence in the Ark of the Covenant and the Word of God taking flesh and dwelling among us.
Learn that through God's grace, Mary is the new Ark of the Covenant.
Important Announcements:
Chapter 4 Test: The Chapter 4 test on The Word of God Made Present among Us will take place on Tuesday, September 17.
1st Trimester Service Hours and Reflections: Each student is asked to complete two service hours per trimester. Their 1st Trimester Service Hours and Reflections are due Wednesday, October 30. This will be complete on Google Classroom.
