Way to go both 5/6th grade volleyball teams becoming 2024 City Champions! They rocked it this past weekend!
Reading: Our main reading skills we will develop this week include summarizing, identifying key details, and identifying cause and effect relationships between people and events. We will learn about the fall of the Aztec and the rise of the Inca. It has been so interesting comparing and contrasting civilizations thus far!
Grammar: Students will use words or phrases in sentences to compare and contrast ideas. Students will also learn how to differentiate between action verbs and linking verbs.
Morphology: Latin root tract meaning "to pull or draw" (We did learn this last year, so this is review but also great practice using context and morphology to determine the meaning of words.)
Writing: Students will be writing the 1st draft of their Aztec paragraph for their Codex project that we are working on throughout this unit. This should include an introduction sentence, supporting details, and a concluding statement. They will also be choosing an image and writing captions to go along with their writing.
Spelling: I am trying out spelling according to the Amplify curriculum for the first time and I will determine if I will continue this in the future based on results and if it proves to be beneficial.
Homework: Activity p. 9.6 (spelling practice - use definitions on p. 6.4))
**Spelling Test- Friday (words written in agenda)

This week students will learn the different ways we can use our remainder based on the context of the problem. We will use the acronym T.A.C.O to remember the 4 ways- Trash It, Allocate It, Copy it, and One More. We will focus primarily on "Allocate it" and "One More" scenarios, as those are mose likely to be used in the real world. Students will learn how to turn their remainder into a fraction/decimal as a way to allocate it and real-life situations where we might actually need to add one more to the quotient to accommodate the scenario.
*We are wrapping up our unit on Dividing by 2-Digit Divisors and will be ready to test next week. More details to come.*
Trash It Scenario:
At a banquet hall, each table requires 18plates. The kitchen has 387plates available. How many full tables can be set?
Allocate Scenario:
A spacecraft collects 234 pounds of rocks from the moon. The rocks will be divided evenly among 36 groups of scientists for study. What weight of rocks will each group receive?
Copy It Scenario:
To watch a safety video, 294 employees will be arranged into conference rooms that each hold 30 people. The remaining people will watch the video in the cafe. How many people will watch the video in the cafe?
One More Scenario:
A company ships new basketballs in boxes that fit up to 14 basketballs. How many boxes are needed for an order of 202 basketballs?
