This is our final full week of Language Arts in 5th grade! I am going to miss this class SO very much! We are wrapping up our Renaissance unit with the end of unit reading comprehension assessment. We will also spend some time reviewing grammar and morphology concepts we have learned as well. Students will share their TIME magazine covers with the class since we do not have time to leave them displayed in the hallway.
Skills we are developing this week include:
Reading:
identify main idea and key details to read for the "gist" and summarize sections
interpret and explain the meaning of unknown words and of common idioms and adages.
explain how reasons they identify support points an author makes in a text
Homework: No homework!
Math: Mrs. Bennett
This week, students will be creating their own story problems to model the division of a whole number by a unit fraction. They will use visual fraction models to represent their thinking and show how the division works. For example, they might create a scenario where they have 4 pizzas and want to know how many 1/8-sized slices they can make. Students will also be asked to clearly explain their story context and how it shows the division of a whole number by a unit fraction. This hands-on work will help deepen their understanding and connect math to real-world situations in a meaningful way!
Homework:
5/12 - SS #105
5/13- SS #106
5/14- SS #107
5/15- SS #108
5/16- SS Quiz #27
Social Studies: Mrs. Crush
Our 5th graders are exploring how the ideas and structures of Classical Greece and Rome helped shape Kentucky’s state government. Students will discover how democratic principles from ancient Athens and the Roman Republic influenced the way our government is organized today.
They’ll also learn how these ancient influences show up in other ways—like the design of our state buildings! Kentucky’s Capitol, for example, was built in the Neoclassical style, which means it uses the architecture of ancient Greece and Rome. Finally, we’ll look at how written laws and constitutions—like Kentucky’s—can be traced back to the legal traditions of ancient Rome.
It’s an exciting way to connect the past to the present!
Religion: Mrs. Crush
Students will begin Ch. 17 "Jesus' Apostles Share in God's Work" in their Word of Life workbooks. The students will come to know the significance of Jesus' action of washing His Apostles' feet at the Last Supper, will learn that through the Sacrament of Holy Orders, men are called to imitate Christ in laying down their lives in service to the world, and will learn the words and external actions used within the Rite of Ordination of Priests.
Words to Know: Holy Orders, ordained, order, Rite of Ordination
Last week, we started a Mock Conclave. We will continue this week to see who our Class Pope will be! See photos below.
