This week students will continue their focus on the essential questions:
How can I briefly and accurately express the main ideas and supporting details of the text?
How can using the text to justify my answers help me better understand what the author is saying?
Students will be focusing on the following skills:
Identify the main idea and themes
Explain how details are needed to support the main idea
Summarize text with key supporting details
Students are practicing turning a heading into question form to help determine the main idea of a text.
We will be reading informational texts, specifically biographies, as a class to practice strategies in determining the importance of a text. Students will also be reading leveled texts and informational passages with the use of graphic organizers to synthesize and summarize their thinking using text evidence.

MATH: MRS. BENNETT
This week in Math class we will play a a fun game to review all the material we have covered so far this year. This will allow us to prepare for the Math MAP test! Students will test on Tuesday 1/24 and Friday 1/27. We will test for about 45 minutes each day. This will hopefully prevent testing fatigue and allow them to give their best effort! We will also begin to work on 2-digit x 2-digit using our understanding of place value relations!
*Please ensure you are checking your child's Simple Solutions lesson nightly for accuracy and completion. I have noticed an increase in the number of questions incorrect in recent lessons. These skills are important building blocks for students math journey and it is important they take their time to learn and practice these skills correctly. I appreciate your support at home!*

SOCIAL STUDIES: MRS. CRUSH
In Math Workshop, we started a new project, "Using a Scale to Create a Map," focusing on the West and Southwest Regions. There are a few students who have states from the Midwest Region. Each student was assigned a different states and they will be creating a map with a title, cities, geographical features, compass rose, scale, and bodies of water. Using their scale, they will create multiple step math problems. In Social Studies, we will focus on the Southwest Region first and students will be doing a mini Landmark Project. Students will be assessed on the Southwest Region State Capitals + States on Thursday, February 2. (There are only four states in the Southwest Region).
We will also begin our Research Project on Kentucky Counties. Each student will be assigned a cluster of counties. They will focus on places, government, people, and events in their cluster.
