Point by Point Style Compare and Contrast Writing

Turn your chart into an a different essay. Here is how:

  1. First describe everything in row 1 (rows go left to right); use as many paragraphs for the information in row 1 as would be appropriate
  2. Next describe everything in row 2
  3. Describe everything in row 3
  4. Do this for all of your rows
  5. You decide what you put in your introduction
  6. You decide what you put in your conclusion

500 words is a C

750 words is a B

1000 words is an A

Expand on what you put in your chart: give an example, restate it, write a longer version of it, explain the importance of it, etc.

Label each essay as "Point by Point" or "Block"

Turn your chart into an essay. Here is how:

  1. First describe everything in column B; use as many paragraphs for the information in column B as would be appropriate
  2. Next describe everything in column C; use as many paragraphs for the information in column C as would be appropriate
  3. Last describe everything in column D: use as many paragraphs for the information in column D as would be appropriate
  4. You decide when and where column A goes; use as many paragraphs for the information in column A as would be appropriate
  5. You decide what you put in your introduction
  6. You decide what you put in your conclusion

1000 words is an A

Follow this organizer to write a compare / contrast essay. The items in PURPLE are what you fill out.

Your assignment is to compare and contrast the movie "Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" with the movie "Grapes of Wrath."

  1. Create a Google Doc
  2. Create a table on the document
  3. All work must be written in a table
  4. In the left column, list the topics you will discuss
  5. In the top row, write Topics in column one, Grapes of Wrath in column two, Jane Pittman in column three, Both in column four
  6. Always, column one will be "Topics"; always column four will be "Both"; always columns two and three will be the names of the two items you are comparing and contrasting: Tom vs Jane -or- American South after Civil War vs American Southwest during the Depression -or- People with Prosperity vs People who are in Need -or- your own ideas for what to compare and contrast
  7. Fill in top row, fill in first column
  8. Next, fill in all blank boxes in the table

What are three items that you own that you feel describe your personality?

What are three character traits that go with those items?

If you lost these items, would you be a different person?

If you were forced to move to a new location, do you think you would become a different person? Why or why not?
