Students have one worksheet on helping verbs.

These words are helping verbs: do, does, did, have, has, had, shall, should, will, would, can, could, may, might, must, am, can, will be, should have been.

Helping verbs are attached to other verbs: could run, could talk, could consider, could fly, could swing.

A helping verb + a verb = a verb phrase, example: should have hiked, should have ran, should have talked, should have sat.

These words are NOT part of a verb phrase: never, really, kind of, often, not, certainly. Example: "should not have hiked" the word not is excluded from the verb phrase. Or, "should certainly have hiked" the word certainly is not part of the verb phrase.

Only verbs are part of a verb phrase. Verbs only are part of a verb phrase. Do not include non-verbs in a verb phrase. Include only verbs in a verb phrase. Only verbs are part of a verb phrase.
