Extra Credit: Today we took a 27-question test on analogies. Some did well, others not. Students can regain all missed points. Here is how to do it. Write one example of four types of analogies to regain one point. Repeat it for another point.

Same assignment, different explanation:

We had seven types of analogies:

  1. part to whole: player and team, letter and alphabet
  2. antonym: big and little, sharp and blunt
  3. action and meaning (of action): curtsey and respect, clap and approval
  4. type of: bee and insect, boots and footwear
  5. degree of intensity: sprinkle and downpour, warm and scalding
  6. item and purpose (of item): blender and mix, shovel and dig
  7. cause and effect: spark and fire, lightning and thunder

Pick four of the above seven. Tell me which four you picked. Write one example for each of the four analogies that you picked. You regained one point.

Pick another four. Provide an example of each. (Tell me which four you picked). You regained a second point.

Initially I intended for students to provide an example of all seven; I cut it down to four.
