Vocabulary words. Students have one vocabulary word that they must do a variety of things with (find definition, words that mean the same thing, words that mean the opposite, draw a picture of, etc.). The complete list is below. Students have a total of 20 words, listed below. Students will have a test on these 20 words on Monday.
- burden--something heavy that must be carried
- calamity--a bad or miserable event
- capacity--the maximum amount that something can hold
- caption--words that go with a picture
- catalog--a list of information
- choice--making a decision when faced with options
- chronology--arranging things in the order in which they happened; arranged by time from first or earliest to last or latest
- churn--to mix
- circulate--to go around from person to person or place to place
- clarification--to make something less confusing or more easily understandable
- cling--to grab and not let go
- closing--the end part of a letter or email, the part that says "Sincerely" followed by a name
- compact--small; put together tightly
- connotation--the emotional reaction that certain words evoke ("economical" versus "cheap"; "outdated" versus "classic.") Words with negative connotations: slimy, rat, moist, infamous, tattle-tale, stingy, headstrong, nitpick, childish. Words with positive connotations: determined, meticulous, sagacious, childlike, secure, relaxing. Would you rather be called "stubborn" or "determined"?
- consult--to ask for advice
- contrary--to do the opposite of what others are doing, sometimes for the purpose of causing trouble
- convention--what is thought of as normal by most people; what most people would expect a thing to be like or look like
- coy--pretending to be ignorant
- creed--a set of religious beliefs
- crest--a symbol or a picture that represents a family, a kingdom, or a place
