Vocabulary words. Students have one vocabulary word that they must do a variety of things with (find definition, words that mean the same thing, words that mean the opposite, draw a picture of, etc.). The complete list is below. Students have a total of 20 words, listed below. Students will have a test on these 20 words on Monday.

  1. burden--something heavy that must be carried
  2. calamity--a bad or miserable event
  3. capacity--the maximum amount that something can hold
  4. caption--words that go with a picture
  5. catalog--a list of information
  6. choice--making a decision when faced with options
  7. chronology--arranging things in the order in which they happened; arranged by time from first or earliest to last or latest
  8. churn--to mix
  9. circulate--to go around from person to person or place to place
  10. clarification--to make something less confusing or more easily understandable
  11. cling--to grab and not let go
  12. closing--the end part of a letter or email, the part that says "Sincerely" followed by a name
  13. compact--small; put together tightly
  14. connotation--the emotional reaction that certain words evoke ("economical" versus "cheap"; "outdated" versus "classic.") Words with negative connotations: slimy, rat, moist, infamous, tattle-tale, stingy, headstrong, nitpick, childish. Words with positive connotations: determined, meticulous, sagacious, childlike, secure, relaxing. Would you rather be called "stubborn" or "determined"?
  15. consult--to ask for advice
  16. contrary--to do the opposite of what others are doing, sometimes for the purpose of causing trouble
  17. convention--what is thought of as normal by most people; what most people would expect a thing to be like or look like
  18. coy--pretending to be ignorant
  19. creed--a set of religious beliefs
  20. crest--a symbol or a picture that represents a family, a kingdom, or a place
