You Can’t be Calling Me Lord

Isaiah 6.8

‘Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying,

“Whom shall I send and who shall go for us?”

And I said, “Here I am, send me!’

The idea for this fun poem was taken from Isaiah 6:8 above - It mentions various members of our congregation by name, (they didn’t mind!) Why not try inserting one or two names from your congregation, or even alter one or two lines to make the poem  fit those you know?

You can’t be calling me Lord, you must mean Cath McGill

You always see her smiling and she’s never thinking ‘ill’

She’s always helping others, and she’s never bored,

She’s the one you’re really after, she will serve the Lord.

You can’t mean me Lord, who you want is Bill Booth,

He says such lovely prayers Lord, and he always tells the truth,

I cannot get me words out, I stutter all day long,

So divvent call on me Lord, I’ll only get it wrong.

No you don’t mean me Lord, you must mean Jennie Magee,

You never her swearing, she’s fit and fancy free.,

She is such a good soul, never sins at all,

She’s the one to look for when you call.

You can’t mean me Lord, cos I’m rather dim,

So if you’ve got a job to do, you should choose her or him

I’m no use at anything, no use whatsoever,

You need someone brainy, you need someone clever.

No I know who you’re after, go see Jill Sinclair,

She works so hard from dawn to dusk and her husband never there.

You’ll find him at the reservoir, so cold he’s turning blue,

And I’m just off to join him, ‘cause there’s nothing else to do.

So I’m sure if you ask the brownies or someone in Junior Church,

They won’t let you down Lord or leave you in the lurch,

Or you could ask Mother’s Union cos they are always free

Ask anyone you like Lord, but don’t call me.
