Silly Billy (Story 1)

Story 1: Silly Billy and the crumpled paper

VISUAL AID: You will need a large paper cut-out of a child, the mask, the magic thumb and some worry dolls. (three stories in one pack)

I want to tell you a story about a little friend of mine who is very shy….

Here he is, his name is Billy. Invite a child out to wear the Silly Billy mask, and have him sit while you tell the story. I’ve also drawn a picture of him, here he is. Produce a cut out blank paper version of a boy.

(1 metre high) Billy was just like you and me really, but quite often he’d make mistakes or say or do something wrong and somehow he ended up with the name ‘Silly Billy.’ (Idea from Revd John Sinclair)

A) Home

Like the time when he left a skateboard on floor in the passage, and his mother nearly fell over it!

‘You are a silly Billy!’ she said to him. (crumple up a leg) He didn’t feel good at all!

B) Lollipop lady

Then there was the time when he stepped off the kerb.

‘Be more careful, don’t be such a Silly Billy!’ shouted the lollipop lady.

He didn’t like to be shouted at… (crumple up another leg)

C) Playground

Billy punched his friend in the arm to say Hello! The friend replied, ‘That was a silly thing to do, go away. You are a Silly Billy!’ (crumple up an arm) He spent the rest of playtime on his own.

D) Classroom

In class he was caught fooling around with scissors!

‘Stop that this minute! Said the teacher, ‘No wonder you are known as Silly Billy!’(crumple up an arm)

E) Dining Hall

The next day he was told off for running into someone in the dining room, and upsetting the tray

(crumple up the body)’ Watch out, you Silly Billy!’

1) Teacher noticed Billy was upset and had a talk with him, she said,

“Billy to have friends you’ve got to BE a good friend! Try and be kind.” (uncrumples a leg) ‘I think she must like me!’ he thought.

2) Billy said to his friend later, ‘I’m sorry if I hurt your arm this morning, I was trying to be friendly. ‘It’s OK’ he replied, ‘Come and let’s play with my ball’. (uncrumples a leg). Billy felt a lot better.

3) On his way home, the lollipop lady smiled at him and waved her hand. He waved back. (uncrumple an arm)

4) He passed some workmen, on the way home as he kicked a stone, pretending it was a football. ‘Here comes David Beckham!’ said one. ‘No, said the other, ‘This lad’s got much more talent! Billy felt so proud. (uncrumple another arm)

5) ‘Did you have a nice day, son?’ whispered his mam, as she greeted him with a big cuddle. Billy felt very loved and all was right with his world. (uncrumple the whole paper body.)

Billy learned a very important lesson, when you are kind and gentle and loving, people are usually that way back to you! When you do nasty things, when you are unkind, things become unpleasant.

What can be done to put things right, when we’ve fallen out with someone?

Discuss how the crumples are still there. Why do you think you can still see the creases are still there?

Story 2 Silly Billy and the Worry Dolls:                                         KEY STAGE 1 &2

VISUAL AID: Another assembly for another day is The Worry Dolls in the story called Silly Billy in the same pack.

Silly Billy tells the tale of Silly Billy’s worries, which takes him on a journey, during which he discovers Worry Dolls.

Read the book out and at the end, show the children a magic thumb and cloth.

Demonstrate writing your worries on the magic cloth, (which then disappears into the plastic thumb!) At the same time say:-

Jesus said , Cast all your cares upon God for he cares for you!

When we give God our worries in prayer, who needs Worry Dolls,

We have someone greater who cares for each one of us.

Story 3 Silly Billy and Lucy’s Party:                                              KEY STAGE 1 & 2

VISUAL AID: An alternative story taken from Jennifer Northway’s book called Lucy’s Quarrel, which also uses the idea of the crumpled cut-out doll) Thanks to my daughter-in-law, Amanda for this extra idea on the same theme.)

Teacher enters in costume as Little Lucy:

‘She’s not coming to party; she isn’t my friend anymore!

She said I was selfish, and I always wanted my own way.

Then she said I was BOSSY! She was so rude to me!

I NEVER WANT TO SEE HER AGAIN!’ (Come in and cry!)

Oh Hello! (acknowledge the children)

My name is Lucy. You probably wonder why I’m crying….

Well I was playing nicely with my friend Alice in the playground yesterday, and telling her about my birthday party …and how everyone has to do as I tell them because it’s my birthday party.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT SHE SAID TO ME?

She said, YOU’RE BOSSY! you’re always bossy, we never do what anyone else wants to do. !

‘No I’m not’ I said ‘YOU’RE bossy, we always have to do what YOU want!

Then: SHE STUCK HER TONGUE OUT AT ME! So I stuck my tongue out at her.

And now my mam says I should make up with her and that we will be friends again before the party. I SHOULD MAKE UP WITH HER? She should make up with me.

My gran says ‘People shouldn’t quarrel, and not make up.’

And I said to my gran “I DON’T WANT CHOCLATE CAKE ANYMORE BECAUSE THAT IS ALICE’S FAVOURITE.

Then she said “It’s your favourite too.” But I said: “I DON’T CARE! I WANT A LEMON ONE!”
