Dr. Marc Michel hosted a discussion at GEOS Tuesday on "Demystifying undergraduate research," at which representatives from many of the department's research groups presented.
Dr. Laura Neser participated in a panel at Newman Library yesterday for Open Education Week, entitled "Connecting the Opens: Connecting Open Education, Open Access, and Open Publishing." The panel led a discussion for future professors on topics including open access, open educational resources, and open data. (Dr. Neser is well known for her open-access introductory geoscience textbook!)
Grad student Jarely Mendez presented work from the SEG EVOLVE Carbon Solutions program. Jarely led the Virginia Tech team, who evaluated the CO2 storage potential in the Gulf of Mexico and proposed a storage site. The team also included Geosciences grad students Emmanuel Irumhe and Lars Koehn, undergrad Isabella Andrade, and faculty advisor Dr. Ryan Pollyea. And undergraduate student Rachel Wilson presented a poster on data-driven visualization of CO2 storage prospects, based on a summer internship she did last year at Advanced Resources International under the mentorship of GeoHokie alumnus Ben Roth.
The Museum of Geosciences held their second Hokie for a Day event in collaboration with CENI at the Moss Arts Center. Sixty-one students and seven chaperones from Floyd County schools visited the Museum. They rotated through five stations: Omniglobe, Fossil/Paleo Prep Lab, Geochem Lab, Rock Cycle, and Scientific Method stations. Hunter Cornwell, Alix Ehlers, Alaina Helm, Sofia Kryder, Cecil Lavezzo, and Vicki Yarborough helped make this event successful. Photos of the
