Ryan Pollyea group visit to drill rig

On Sept, 8, a group of VT graduate students and faculty visited drilling operations in Botetourt County, Virginia, as part of of federally-funded research effort to characterize Appalachian fold-and-thrust belt geology for geologic carbon storage. The drilling project, led by Professors Ryan Pollyea (Geosciences) and Nino Ripepi (Mining & Minerals Engineering), is supported by the Southeast Regional CO2 Utilization and Storage Acceleration Partnership (SECARB-USA). The borehole will reach a terminal depth of 2,500 feet below grade with the objective to fill important data gaps in the geologic structure of the Catawba syncline. The site visit was hosted by Titan America and included a presentation about geology of the Catawba Sycline from Dr. Philip Prince (VT Geosciences Adjunct Professor and alum), an introduction to borehole drilling and core recovery from Dycus Diamond Drilling, and a discussion about rock core logging from professional geologist, Nathan Crowther.
