Geosciences outreach during Hokie For A Day

The Museum of Geosciences, led by museum manager Mariah Green, participated in "Hokie for a Day" outreach with 66 students from schools in Floyd County. Students learned about geoscience through six stations (Plate Tectonics, Scavenger Hunt, Stream table, Dinosaurs of VA, Rock Cycle, Minerals and Light Geochemistry Lab). Volunteers included Associate Professor Mark Caddick and grad students Prescott Vayda, Alaina Helm, David Bunin, Jonny Prouty, Ben Kligman, Grant Euen, and Priyanka Bose. 

GEOS Tuesday: Marc Michel on demystifying undergraduate research

Last week's GEOS Tuesday was a terrific overview for undergraduates on how to find and navigate research projects, presented by Associate Professor Marc Michel.

CZ Seismic team checking out new instruments in Houston

Professor Steve Holbrook, lab manager Sean Bemis, and PhD student Ben Eppinger traveled to Houston last week to visit Stryde, a company that builds small, compact seismic nodal systems. The CZ geophysics group is considering purchasing 2,000 of these instruments (fingers crossed).


Friday seminar: Dr. Patricia Persaud

Last week's Friday seminar was given by Dr. Patricia Persaud of the University of Arizona on "The Role of Microseismic Monitoring of Underground Storage During the Clean Energy Transition." Dr. Persaud was hosted by Prof. Steve Holbrook.

Coffee with Super-donor Dr. Pat Tracy

Department Head Steve Holbrook, Associate Professor Brian Romans, and PhD students Priyanka Bose and Yezi Yang met with super-donor Dr. Pat Tracy and College of Science alumni coordinator Jenny Orzolek before the break. Dr. Tracy has given generously to the department, including supporting graduate student research fellowships and Museum of Geoscience renovations.
