Dr. Caddick Presents at Open House

Associate Professor Mark Caddick gave terrific presentations to prospective undergraduates and their families (over 1,000 people in total) on behalf of the College of Science at the Open House this past weekend. The presentation featured a video of Ryan Pollyea discussing his research on wastewater injection-induced earthquakes and was hosted by Samantha Hannah of the College of Science.

VT-Geos Booth at Open House

Our booth at this past weekend's VT Open House was well attended, by both Geosciences faculty and students. We had a great turnout of prospective undergraduates from all over Virginia and beyond. Many thanks to April Newcomer for organizing this, and to the many volunteers who staffed the booth and talked up the department, including faculty Mark Caddick, Ying Zhou, Maddy Schreiber, and Megan Duncan, and students Michala Puckett, Mary Verne, Gavin Belcher, Isaiah McKinney, Sam Phillips, Ben Avellaneda, Priya Bose, Adam Laxton, Ella Davis, and David Bruce. Thank you for helping us grow VT-Geosciences!

Seen on Facebook: Alumnus Dan Needham in Derring Hall

Alum Dan Needham (MS, 1987, Geophysics) visited campus for the VT/Georgia Tech game and posted this picture on Facebook, along with a with this explanation (which only emphasizes how little Derring has changed over the years): "Went back to campus for only the 2nd time since getting my grad degree in Geophysics in 1987. Saw the Hokies battle GT at Lane then took a stroll across campus. Really miss the place! Wandered by the geophysics grad student offices in Derring and found that a Farside comic I taped to the door in 1986 was still there (replaced many times I am sure)! Thanks to all the grad students who laughed at it and kept it going!"

Sean Bemis heads back to Nepal

Research Scientist Sean Bemis attended the 35th Himalaya-Karakorum-Tibet Workshop (HKT – 2022) in Pokhara, Nepal last week. He presented work led by grad student Elizabeth Curtiss and enjoyed some spectacular views of the Himalaya.

Communicating Science through Art

The GS(art)S team, including grad students Amy Hagen, Cece Wood, Jess DePaolis, and Erika Goldsmith, led a workshop on communicating science through art. GSRS chair Kayla McCabe assisted with logistics.
