Geosciences Booth at Open House

The Department of Geosciences had a great turnout, and lots of awesome volunteers, at our booth at the Virginia Tech Open House over the weekend. This event welcomes high school students and parents who are considering Virginia Tech. It's a great recruiting opportunity for the department. Those pictured at right include Ben Gill, Madeline Kronebusch, Gavin Belcher, Julio Montenegro, Maddi Williams, Mark Caddick, Simba Srivastava, Benjamin Avellaneda, Katie Hughes, Gage Rodriguez, and Annabelle Fry.

GEOS Tuesday: Grad/undergrad mentoring mixer

Last week's GEOS Tuesday event was a grad/undergrad mentoring mixer, organized and expertly run by Ella Davis. Graduate students are sitting on the outside of the U-shaped table, with undergraduates facing them and moving every couple of minutes. The event is aimed at connecting undergraduates with potential graduate student mentors.


Celebration of new National Academy members

President Tim Sands and Vice President for Research Dan Sui hosted a reception on Thursday honoring Virginia Tech's new National Academy members,  including professors Bob Bodnar and Shuhai Xiao. The event was attended by the faculty's full professors.

Friday Seminar: Dr. Geoffrey Gilleaudeau

Last week's Friday Seminar featured Dr. Geoffrey Gilleaudeau (George Mason University), speaking on "Historical Geology through the lens of sedimentary geochemistry: Perspectives from the Proterozoic-Paleozoic transition." The visit was hosted by Dr. Shuhai Xiao.

Brian Romans zooms into class from the drill ship

Dr. Brian Romans talked to the students in Earth's Dynamic Systems from onboard the drill ship Joides Resolution off the coast of Greenland. Brian gave a tour of the vessel, discussed the cruise’s scientific goals, and answered student questions.
