New Student Welcome

The semester's first GEOS Tuesday was our new student welcome, which brought together in the Museum of Geosciences first-year students, transfer students, and grad students for an introduction to the department. Undergrad Gage Rodriguez and grad student Ella Davis did a great job acting as emcees, and academic advisor April Newcomer and undergraduate program director Mark Caddick also spoke.

Coastal Hazards Lab fieldwork 

The Coastal Hazards Lab, led by Dr. Tina Dura, conducted microplastics fieldwork on the Eastern Shore in July. The Lab will collaborate with microplastics researchers in the Biology department to analyze microplastics concentration in sediment cores and determine their composition and concentration through time.


Public Television Interview

A documentary producer and film crew from Oregon Public Broadcasting visited the Coastal Hazards Lab in June to interview and film members of the lab regarding their work reconstructing past earthquakes and tsunamis along the coast of Oregon. The documentary will air in winter 2024. Stay tuned!

EDS Field Trip

This semester's Earth's Dynamic Systems class, representing new students in our program, took a field trip to the New River, led by professors Mark Caddick and Shuhai Xiao.


Friday Seminar: Henry Yampolsky

Last week's Friday Seminar was a special training on Virginia Tech's policies on harrassment, led by Henry Yampolsky, Assistant Director for Education, Outreach and Conflict Resolution in Virginia Tech's Office for Equity and Accessibility.
