Pi (in the face) Day!

Thanks to our department's victory in the Giving Day competition, department head Steve Holbrook got to throw a pie into the face of Biological Sciences department head Bob Cohen. The event was fun, well attended, and even made the VT Daily Doodle! We expect this competition to become an annual Giving Day tradition.

Pi Day in the Museum: A visit from a VT Therapy Dog!

On Pi Day (3/14), the Department of Geosciences was treated by a visit from one of the Virginia Tech Therapy Dogs, who brought not just pie, but also joy, into the Museum of Geosciences.

GEOS Tuesday: Undergraduate Research Information Session

Grad student representatives from twenty (!) research groups described their research, skills gained, and potential opportunities to undergraduate students.


Friday seminar: Dr. Mathieu Morlighem (Dartmouth)

Last week's Friday seminar was given by Dr. Mathieu Morlighem of Dartmouth on "Can we (yet) predict how fast Greenland is going to melt?" Dr. Morlighem was hosted by Assoc. Prof. Sarah Stamps.

Department of Geosciences at the VT Open House

The department had a booth at the  VT Open House this past weekend for prospective high school students and transfer students. Faculty who volunteered included Mark Caddick and Marc Michel, and students ambassadors included Sam VanDenburgh, Ella Davis, Gage Rodriguez, Sam Phillips, Madeline Kronebusch, Gavin Belcher, Adam Laxton, and Katie Hughes. 


Hokie for a Day volunteers

Geoscience was VERY well represented yesterday with two of the six tables at the Hokie for a Day fest staffed by Geoscience undergrads. Undergrads Darien Bradley, Noah Crook, and Simba Srivastava shared 3D printed fossils and bones to help them show the 5th grade students from Floyd County evidence that birds and dinosaurs are related.  In addition, the College of Science ambassadors' table was staffed by Julio Montenegro, Annabelle Fry, Maddy Kronebusch, and Holly Hughes

Rehousing Day at Prices Fork

The paleo group and the Museum of Geosciences event spent Saturday rehousing minerals, rocks, and fossils at the Prices Fork Off-site Storage Facility.
