On Friday the department held its second annual "Geoscientist for a Day" event, which brings prospective undergraduates (high school juniors and seniors) and their parents to the department to experience what life as a geosciences undergraduate is like. Thanks go to April Newcomer for organizing the logistics, and especially to Drs. Mark Caddick and Laura Neser for hosting the students. Laura gave a sample lecture in Derring and led the students in a demonstration of the sediment flume in the new lab building.
This past weekend the first fall Open House took place in Squires, and we once again had outstanding participation from our faculty and students. Faculty who volunteered included Mark Caddick, Julia Cisneros, and Megan Duncan, and student volunteers included Savaria Parrish, Benjamin Avellaneda, Maddi Williams, Brooklyn Harris, Isabella Andrade, Saye Woodard, Claire Becker, Gavin Belcher, and Angelina Stephens.
Students and faculty in the Study Abroad program visited the Dolomites in the Italian Alps last week, working with Drs. Ken Eriksson and Brian Romans to study the record of continental rifting and marine carbonate platform development.

Several of our students won awards at last week's GSA national conference. PhD student Danielle Fitzgerald won an award from the Gretchen Blechschmidt Research Fund; PhD student Prescott Vayda won Outstanding Mention for a meritorious research proposal; PhD student Esther Oyedele won two awards, a a Sand travel award and an E-an Zen Geoscience Outreach grant; and undergraduate Savaria Parrish won the IDEA scholarship.
Professor Mark Caddick led last week's GEOS Tuesday, providing a thorough overview of the Study Abroad program that happens every fall in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland.
